Northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis)
Also called “arborvitae”, meaning “tree of life” after indigenous peoples showed the 16th century French explorer Cartier how to treat scurvy with cedar foliage. Average height 40-50 ft (12-15 m), slow growing and long lived. Often found in lowland alkaline swamps associated with balsam fir, birch, and red maple. A favorite browse for white-tailed deer. Seedlings MUST be protected to ensure survival from browse.
