Eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana)
Actually a juniper, not a true cedar as the name implies. Average height 40-50 ft (12-15 m), slow growing and long lived. Tolerant of drought and sandy soil. Often found in abandoned fields and pastures but frequently outcompeted by hardwoods. Also found in lowlands with northern white cedar, aspen, and birch.
Uses: Wood crafting, cover for wildlife, soil erosion control.
