Michigan Bearberry
Michigan Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a low-growing, evergreen groundcover native to the dunes, dry forests, and rocky slopes of Michigan’s northern landscapes. With leathery olive-green leaves and delicate pink-white spring flowers, it forms a dense mat just 6 inches tall, spreading up to 4 feet wide. This hardy plant thrives in sandy, acidic soils and tolerates extreme temperatures, making it ideal for erosion control and low-maintenance landscaping. Its trailing stems root as they spread, anchoring soil on slopes and shoreline edges. By late summer, small edible berries ripen—providing food for wildlife and a nod to the plant’s traditional medicinal uses. Selected from vigorous clones in Keweenaw County, Michigan Bearberry is a resilient, beautiful choice for native restoration and ecological design.
