History. The first Paulared apple tree was discovered in 1960 by grower Lewis Arends near a McIntosh block in his orchard in Sparta Township, Kent County, Michigan. He named the apple after his wife, Pauline. Paulared apples appeared on the market in 1968.
Paula Red is an early apple, ripening in late August or early September in most areas. Not usually thought of as a keeping apple, it can be stored for around 2 months in cold storage. It has a nice balance between tart and sweet, with maybe a touch heavier in the tart department. Paula Red makes a fantastic eating apple and is often touted as an excellent choice for apple sauce.
