Ground breaking things are happening at Clare Conservation District

OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
"TO ENCOURAGE THE WISE USE OF OUR NATURAL RESOURCES THROUGH PROMOTION AND EDUCATION."

Our vision for the future

We are working to transform our 12-acre parcel into a vibrant educational and demonstration center that champions the wise use of natural resources. Essentially creating a living classroom for the community. Our property features a vernal pool, permaculture orchards, pollinator gardens, and an abundance of native plants, shrubs and trees that support a thriving wildlife habitat. We have plans for a building that will be our new office and meeting room as well as cold storage for native tree and plants sales. The attached pavilion will host a variety of fun and educational outdoor activities. We envision a space where learning and nature unite, inspiring sustainable practices and fostering a deep connection with the environment.

Announcements

Picture
We’re proud to announce that our Northern Red Oak was named the largest tree in Clare County in the 2023–2025 Michigan Big Tree Hunt! With a stunning 209-inch circumference, this majestic oak stands as a living testament to the resilience and beauty of Michigan’s native hardwoods. Hosted by ReLeaf Michigan, the Big Tree Hunt celebrates the state’s most remarkable trees and we’re honored to have one of them rooted right here in on our habitat gardens.

Grants Awarded

We are overjoyed to announce that Clare CD was selected to receive an $1,241 educational grant from the Wildflower Association of Michigan (WAM). Award was presented during their annual conference in March 2025. Funds will be used to amend soil, seed and plant pollinator field garden and for additional native wildflowers throughout the property. This project will take place through March 2026.

Clare CD has recently been awarded $8,000 from the Clare County Community Foundation. The Clare County Community Foundation exists to cultivate the power of giving within our community, support long-term transformation, and help ensure all residents thrive. These funds will used for sustainable energy and infrastructure development.

The Clare Conservation District is honored to receive a $10,000 grant from the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation in support of the Habitat Education Property. These funds will help us purchase materials for a new storage barn—built in collaboration with the local CTE Building Trades program—and install interpretive signage that enhances environmental learning and community engagement across the site.

We’re thrilled to announce that the Dow Company Foundation has awarded $10,000 to support the  development and construction of the office and education building . This generous gift helps bring us one step closer to creating a welcoming space where people of all ages can connect with nature, learn by doing, and build a more resilient future together. We’re deeply grateful for Dow’s commitment to community and conservation.

Our Always Evolving, Future Plans & Ideas:

  • Perimeter fencing-a mixture of natural vegetation and wood fencing will ensure free movement of all wildlife as well as ensure guest don't wander out of bounds.
  • Permaculture orchards & agroforestry areas will demonstrate no till and light till regenerative agriculture methods. Design and species TBD.
  • Interpretive boards will be added along trails and at each education garden observation area.
