Eastern Prickly Pear, (opuntia cespitos), is a low, spreading cactus native to the Great Lakes region, thriving in Michigan’s sandy openings, dry slopes, and sun‑exposed barrens where few other plants can persist. Its flat green pads form tight clumps that brighten in early summer with showy yellow flowers touched with red, drawing native bees and other pollinators. By late season, the plant produces red fruits eaten by wildlife and historically used by Indigenous communities. Exceptionally drought‑tolerant and adapted to nutrient‑poor soils, this species is a striking addition to restoration plantings and educational gardens that highlight Michigan’s resilient dry‑sand flora.
