North Blue lowbush blueberry
North Blue is a compact, cold-hardy blueberry cultivar developed by the University of Minnesota, ideal for northern climates and small-space gardens. This half-high hybrid blends the resilience of lowbush blueberries with the fruit quality of highbush types, making it a favorite among growers seeking both productivity and ornamental appeal. Plants typically reach 20 to 30 inches in height and produce vigorous summer growth with glossy dark green foliage that turns a rich red in fall. The berries are light blue, very large, and firm, with excellent flavor—averaging around 120 per pound. In South Haven, Michigan, fruit ripens in mid-July, with annual yields ranging from 3 to 7 pounds per plant. North Blue thrives in USDA Zones 3 through 8 and can withstand temperatures as low as –35°F with adequate snow cover. It performs best in well-drained sandy loam with a pH between 4.0 and 5.5, and benefits from full to filtered sun and consistent moisture. This cultivar is well-suited for fresh eating, U-pick operations, processing, and educational landscapes, offering both nutritional value and visual interest.
Plants are 12-18" and are in 1 liter pots.
