Jubilium tart cherry
Jubileum (Prunus cerasus ‘Jubileum®’) is a premium tart cherry cultivar introduced by Dr. Amy Iezzoni of Michigan State University. It ripens about 10 days earlier than Montmorency, making it one of the earliest tart cherries available. The fruit is dark purplish-red, with richly colored flesh and a flavor so balanced and sweet that it’s often mistaken for a sweet cherry with a hint of tartness.
This variety is self-pollinating, eliminating the need for companion trees, and is hardy in Zones 5–8. Trees reach 15–20 feet tall with an upright, rounded canopy, making them suitable for orchards, edible landscapes, and small farms. Jubileum cherries hang well on the tree, allowing for flexible harvest timing, and are excellent for pies, preserves, and fresh snacking.
The tree is disease-resistant, particularly to common cherry issues like leaf spot and mildew, and thrives in full sun with well-drained soil. Its productivity and aesthetic appeal make it a favorite among growers seeking reliable, flavorful fruit with minimal maintenance.
