Whitney crabapple
First grown around 1865 at Whitney Nursery in Franklin Grove, Illinois, by nurseryman A.R. Whitney. It was first recorded in 1869. The Snowdrift crabapple is a beloved ornamental tree, admired for its abundant spring blossoms and year-round beauty. In spring, it bursts into clouds of fragrant white flowers, attracting pollinators and lighting up the landscape. By late summer, the tree produces clusters of small, bright orange-red crabapples that persist into winter, providing food for birds and striking seasonal color. With its rounded form, glossy green foliage, and exceptional cold hardiness, Snowdrift is a reliable choice for gardens, parks, and conservation plantings. It serves as an excellent pollinator for other apple varieties while offering ornamental charm and ecological value.
