Bottlebrush Grass quart
Bottlebrush Grass (Elymus hystrix) is a graceful native woodland bunchgrass recognized by its distinctive, bottlebrush‑shaped seed heads that rise 2–4 feet above broad, arching leaves. Preferring partial shade and dry to medium soils, it thrives beneath oaks, maples, and other canopy trees where many grasses struggle. Its airy, bristled spikes catch the light and add texture through summer, maturing to pale tan in fall and providing seed for birds and small wildlife. As a cool‑season grass, Bottlebrush Grass greens up early, supports woodland insects, and contributes to the layered structure of healthy forest understories. Durable, adaptable, and low‑maintenance, it is an excellent choice for shade gardens, naturalized woodland edges, and restoration plantings where subtle movement and ecological function are equally valued.
