Rough Blazing Star (liatris aspera ) is a striking late‑summer perennial of Michigan’s dry prairies and open meadows, rising 2–4 feet tall in a sturdy vertical line of tufted, rosy‑purple flower heads that draw in clouds of native bees, monarchs, swallowtails, and other long‑tongued pollinators. Its deep taproot gives it exceptional drought tolerance and long life in sandy or gravelly soils, while its upright form adds height and texture to restoration plantings, pollinator gardens, and meadow edges. Blooming later than many prairie species, Liatris aspera provides critical nectar during the migration season and anchors dry, sunny landscapes with its bold color and ecological value.
