Qualified Foresters List

Landowners are strongly encouraged to follow the referral procedure set by the Conservation District. This process allows the district forester to collaborate better with you, the landowner. By following the process, the landowner is better suited to find a consultant that fits their land needs. Please call the office and speak with our district forester for more detailed information.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) maintains a list of Qualified Foresters. These individuals are registered with the state and can write the management plans required by the Qualified Forest Program (QFP). The list of Qualified Foresters is available here.
Consulting Foresters may or may not be Qualified Foresters. If you are a landowner looking for forestry assistance that does not include a management plan for the QFP, a Consulting Forester may be able to help. To further complicate this, the State of Michigan has a registry of Foresters. You can check a forester's status with the state registry here.
Please note that both Qualified Foresters and Consulting Foresters are self-employed professional foresters whose business involves managing non-industrial, private forestland for a fee. Thus, the consultant works for the landowner. Fees may be negotiable and are based on hourly rates, per unit rates, or a commission of timber sale proceeds.
The Conservation Districts do not endorse any consultant over another. You are advised to check references when hiring any type of contractor.
