Tamarack (Larix laricina)
Michigan’s only deciduous conifer. Needles turn bright yellow before dropping in the fall. Average height 33-66 ft (10-20 m), fast growing and relatively short lived. Often found in wetland forests and peatlands associated with sphagnum moss, black spruce, jack pine, aspen, and birch.
Uses: Lumber, fuel, cover for wildlife, wetland forest establishment
